Marcos Halts EDSA Rehabilitation, Cancels Odd-Even Scheme
The Philippine government's decision to temporarily suspend the EDSA rehabilitation project has sent ripples through the nation. President Marcos announced the suspension on Sunday, June 1st, citing concerns over the potential for significant traffic disruptions and public inconvenience under the original plan. "The current plan would cause too much inconvenience and heavy traffic," stated President Marcos in a press briefing. The government aims to develop a revised plan, incorporating newer technologies, which they believe will reduce the project's duration from three years to six months to one year. This decision also led to the cancellation of the planned odd-even traffic scheme, a move welcomed by many commuters. The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) Chairman Atty. Don Artes confirmed the cancellation, stating that the suspension provides an opportunity to revisit the plan and mitigate the impact on the public. The MMDA will continue to implement its existing number coding scheme. The government's commitment to improving EDSA while minimizing disruption underscores its dedication to public welfare.
