Rising Costs Cripple Bolivian Upholstery Businesses
La Paz, Bolivia – The upholstery industry in Bolivia is facing a significant crisis, with rising material costs and a decline in customers forcing many businesses to the brink. The price of essential materials, such as leatherette, has skyrocketed by 120%, according to several upholsterers interviewed by Red Uno.
"Everything is double the price," said one upholsterer, highlighting the strain on their business. "The materials, the leatherette, it's all gone up 120%."
This dramatic increase has resulted in a sharp decrease in customer demand. Many businesses have been forced to lay off workers, while others are considering closing their doors altogether. One upholsterer, who previously employed three others, stated that he is now working alone due to the lack of work and inability to meet payroll. He is even considering closing his business this month due to rising rent costs.
The crisis underscores the challenges faced by small businesses in Bolivia navigating economic uncertainty. While the situation is dire for many, the resilience and determination of these upholsterers to adapt and persevere offers a glimmer of hope.
