Blockade in Vinto, Cochabamba Turns Violent: Ambulance Attacked, Patients and Medical Staff Injured
In a shocking incident on Friday evening in Vinto, Cochabamba, Bolivia, protestors participating in a road blockade violently attacked and destroyed an ambulance. The ambulance, belonging to the National Health Fund, was transporting four injured individuals to the Hospital Obrero when it was targeted. Two medical personnel were also injured in the assault.
"The protestors attacked the ambulance, pulled the patients out, and beat them," stated a witness, a local resident who wished to remain anonymous for fear of reprisal. "They also beat the driver and the doctor who was with them."
The Minister of Health, Maria Rene Castro, confirmed the incident and condemned the violence. "We will take legal action against those responsible for this horrific act," she stated in an interview shown in the video. "This is unacceptable violence against medical personnel and those in need of care."
After the attack, a second ambulance was dispatched to transport the injured patients and medical staff to the Hospital Obrero No. 2 in Cochabamba, where they received treatment for their injuries. The video shows the extent of the damage to the ambulance and the injured police officers being helped to safety.
This incident highlights the escalating tensions surrounding the ongoing blockades in Bolivia and the dangers faced by emergency responders and civilians caught in the crossfire. The government's promise of legal action suggests a determination to address such violence and ensure the safety of medical personnel.
