Fourteen Chilean Police Officers Arrested for Bribery
Iquique, Chile – In a significant development, fourteen Chilean police officers from the Guara sub-station have been arrested and charged with aggravated bribery and money laundering. The arrests follow an investigation by Chilean authorities, which uncovered evidence of a bribery scheme involving Bolivian truckers transporting migrants across the border.
According to the investigation, the officers systematically extorted money from the truckers in exchange for allowing their vehicles to pass through checkpoints without inspection. Audio recordings obtained by investigators reveal the officers' direct involvement in the scheme. One recording features an officer stating, "20, 20, 20 Chilean pesos," indicating the amount of the bribe demanded.
The investigation also revealed that the officers had accumulated a significant amount of money, including Bolivian currency and US dollars, which were found during searches of their homes. The scale of the operation and the involvement of multiple officers highlight the systemic nature of the corruption. The arrests are a significant blow to the integrity of the Chilean police force and underscore the ongoing challenges in combating corruption in the region. The case is currently under investigation, and further arrests are possible.
