Bolivian Political Leaders Clash Over Lithium Pricing and Economic Strategy in Televised Debate

La Paz, Bolivia - In a recent televised debate hosted by Red Uno, prominent political figures Samuel Doria Medina and Manfred Reyes Villa engaged in a heated discussion regarding Bolivia's vast lithium reserves and their potential economic exploitation. The debate, part of the 'Uno Decide 2025' series, centered on the valuation and future strategy for the country's abundant energy resource. Samuel Doria Medina initiated the discussion by questioning Manfred Reyes Villa's proposal to sell lithium at a price of $10,000 per ton, emphasizing that this translates to a mere $10 per kilogram. "You know that one kilogram of lithium costs only $10? It's not like gold, which costs $100,000 per kilogram. It's just $10," Doria Medina stated, suggesting that the proposed price undervalues the resource. He further elaborated, "Nobody is going to buy a billion tons of lithium and pay you in advance. Would anyone buy a billion tons of rice and pay you in advance? That's your error." In response, Manfred Reyes Villa clarified his position, asserting that his proposal refers to selling lithium at $10,000 to $12,000 per ton, not per kilogram. He stressed the urgency of capitalizing on lithium now to stabilize Bolivia's economy. "We have 23 million tons, and what we are doing is selling them at $10,000 to $12,000 per ton. We must sell it now. We don't want to wait for sodium or hydrogen to come along and make lithium worthless. We have already missed the train of lithium when a ton was worth $80,000," Reyes Villa argued, highlighting the need to act swiftly to prevent the resource from losing its value due to technological advancements.
