SANTA CRUZ, Bolivia – A 120-hour medical strike in Santa Cruz, initiated by hospital workers, has left hundreds of patients in limbo, with many resorting to sleeping outside medical facilities in hopes of receiving attention. The strike, which began on Monday, July 28, and is scheduled to last until Friday, August 1, stems from unfulfilled demands by authorities. Patients arriving at hospitals early in the morning, some as early as 4:00 AM, are met with closed doors and signs announcing the five-day stoppage. "The queue is endless," stated one frustrated patient, who preferred to remain anonymous. "We sleep outside just for a chance at a ficha (appointment ticket). They don't think about the patients." Another citizen shared, "We die waiting for rescheduling. By the time it's reprogrammed, the patient is already gone." This sentiment highlights the critical delays in medical care, with some individuals facing life-threatening situations due to the lack of immediate attention. The striking workers are demanding the payment of a vaccination bonus and other outstanding issues. The prolonged strike has caused significant disruption to public health services, forcing patients to endure cold temperatures and uncertainty while awaiting care.
