Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – Renan Ferreirinha, the Secretary of Education for Rio, has issued a public statement addressing recent concerns regarding food restrictions at school parties. The clarification comes after a viral video showed a woman and children expressing their frustration over a June party lacking traditional food, attributing the policy to the Education Secretariat. In his response, Secretary Ferreirinha emphasized that traditional foods are not prohibited at school festivities such as June parties and Children's Day celebrations. He stated, “It is important to maintain these cultural manifestations. Imagine a June party without typical food.” He further explained that the department has a balanced and nutritious menu, and while there are regulations regarding ultra-processed foods, these events are considered exceptional circumstances where traditional culinary elements are vital for cultural preservation and community integration.Ferreirinha assured school directors that such events are permitted and encouraged, highlighting their importance for student happiness and school community engagement. He concluded by inviting himself to future school parties, reinforcing the administration's support for these cherished traditions.
