Spain to Apologize for Franco-Era Catholic 'Rehabilitation' Centers
Spain's Dark Secret: Survivors of Franco-Era Catholic 'Rehabilitation' Centers Demand Apology Spain is grappling with its past as survivors of Catholic moral rehabilitation centers, which operated during and after the Francisco Franco dictatorship, demand recognition and a national apology for the harsh treatment they endured. Thousands of women and girls were sent to these institutions, often for minor infractions against strict Catholic moral standards. Consuelo Garcia del Cid, a victim, described her experience: "Life was reduced to working, scrubbing, and praying. My main goal was killing myself." Self-harm was rampant, she revealed, detailing instances of cutting veins. These state-run centers, overseen by the Board for the Protection of Women, inflicted immense suffering. Now, on June 9th, the Spanish Confederation of Religious Entities will hold a ceremony to formally apologize, a momentous occasion in Spain's journey of reconciliation. While this is a step towards healing, Garcia del Cid believes it's not enough, stating: "It was the greatest atrocity Spain has committed against women."
