Cusco, Peru – A significant transportation crisis has gripped the historic city of Cusco, leaving hundreds of tourists, including a group of primary school children and their parents, stranded and frustrated. The disruption, which has paralyzed transport services, particularly affecting routes to and from the iconic Machu Picchu citadel, has drawn sharp criticism regarding the lack of immediate and effective government intervention. The situation escalated following the expiration of a key transport concession, with no apparent plan in place for its replacement. This regulatory void has created a logistical nightmare for visitors, many of whom have traveled thousands of kilometers to experience Peru's rich cultural heritage. One affected tourist, visibly distressed, spoke to reporters, stating, "We are hostages. What is our freedom? What are our rights? We don't live 20 kilometers away; we live thousands of kilometers away, and we have no possibility." He further explained the significant financial and logistical burden, "We had planned to go up to the sanctuary yesterday. We had to reschedule hotels, reschedule tickets, and all of that implies a cost, and it is becoming very difficult for us." The reporter emphasized the gravity of the situation, noting, "It's no joke. What is happening in Cusco right now is lamentable. There are no authorities, no local or central government personalities trying to at least seriously solve the big problem that has arisen in Cusco due to tourist transport." He also alluded to potential internal conflicts, questioning, "Who gains and who loses? Who could be interested in this tourist transport problem in Cusco not being resolved?" Despite changes in ministerial and local officials, a lasting solution remains elusive, exacerbating the distress of those caught in the travel limbo. The incident underscores the urgent need for stable and well-managed infrastructure to support Peru's vital tourism sector.
