Budapest's 12th District Grapples with Persistent Wild Boar Incursions BUDAPEST – Residents of Budapest's 12th district are facing an ongoing challenge as large numbers of wild boars increasingly venture into urban areas, causing property damage and raising concerns among locals. Footage captured recently shows numerous wild boars, including piglets, foraging in a park near Normafa at night, exhibiting little to no fear of human presence. According to a local resident who spoke to RTL News, the issue has been prevalent for months. "I used to only see foxes around here," she stated, "but this week, on one drive, I counted seventeen wild boars – small, large, everyone." She described the animals as "incredibly urbanized," moving with calm steps across roads and through parks, suggesting they have become accustomed to the city environment. The boars' nocturnal activities leave visible traces, with lawns and green spaces extensively dug up, as shown in daytime footage of the affected areas. The local council is aware of the problem and has initiated measures to address it. Orsolya Fekete, a municipal representative and green affairs councilor for the Hegyvidék local government, explained the strategy: "Large metal cages are being set up where feeding has been ongoing for several weeks. The wild boars get used to them, their sense of danger diminishes, and when the maximum number are inside, the trap door closes." Once captured, the animals are transported and subsequently euthanized. However, Fekete noted that this is a time-consuming process, and the capture of the first boars is expected to take several months. The situation highlights the growing interface between urban expansion and wildlife habitats in the Hungarian capital.
