Lanzarote Reels from Historic Floods: Homes Submerged, Roads Impassable After Torrential Rains

Lanzarote, Spain - The Canary Island of Lanzarote experienced severe flooding on Saturday, April 12, 2025, following torrential rainfall that left a trail of destruction across the popular tourist destination. Homes, garages, and parking areas were inundated, while numerous vehicles were submerged and many roads rendered completely impassable. The intensity of the downpour, which lasted for more than three hours, has been described by local officials as unparalleled in the island's history. An expert interviewed in the aftermath stated, "I believe that in history, it has not rained in this manner. We are experiencing the issue of climate change in its full extent." This sentiment underscores the growing concern over extreme weather events. The municipalities of Teguise and Arrecife bore the brunt of the storm, with over 300 incidents reported across the island. Arrecife, a natural water outflow, reportedly received more than 60 liters per square meter, despite only a pre-alert for 15 liters per hour being in place. While authorities confirmed no human losses, the material damage is extensive. Residents were captured on video attempting to clear mud and water from their properties, highlighting the immediate challenges faced by the community. Efforts are now focused on cleaning the streets and assessing the full extent of the damage. Civil Protection is compiling a report to officially request the declaration of a catastrophe zone, which would unlock essential aid for affected residents. Locals are collaborating in the cleanup, though many anticipate that restoring normalcy will be a process spanning several weeks.
