"We saw the smoke and immediately decided to intervene," said one eyewitness, who described breaking windows with a sledgehammer to help those trapped inside. The 45 residents evacuated were relocated, some to family homes and others to unaffected areas within the city. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation. This tragic event marks the second fire at a Zaragoza retirement home in less than a year, following a similar incident in Villafranca de Ebro in November 2024, which resulted in ten deaths. Authorities are working to ensure the safety of elderly residents in the city's retirement homes following this incident.
