Zimbabwe Human Rights Crisis: Dozens of Foreign Nationals Face Inhumane Jail Conditions
Zimbabwean Jails: Inhumane Conditions and Legal Delays for Foreign Nationals Harare, Zimbabwe – A recent report by the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission has shed light on the dire conditions faced by over 70 foreign nationals, including 14 South Africans, incarcerated in Zimbabwean prisons. The commission's findings revealed instances of inhumane treatment and significant delays in legal processes, raising serious concerns about human rights violations. The report detailed the commission's visit to Harare Remand and Chikurubi Maximum Security prisons. Jessie Majome, a member of the commission, stated, "We found dozens of undocumented migrants. When we went on the mission to visit the prison, there were seven South African nationals, but now, in our continuous monitoring, we realize there are more." Many of the detainees were held for immigration offenses, while some faced criminal charges. Paid Saurombe, a human rights lawyer, emphasized the need for immediate action. "We need to have a resolution, not just findings, but at least remedial actions," Saurombe stated. He stressed the importance of rectifying the issues within the prisons and police holding cells. The video footage shows overcrowded conditions and individuals being transported in what appears to be a prison transport vehicle. The report underscores the need for improved conditions and adherence to due process for all detainees, regardless of nationality.
