Moclinejo, Spain – The picturesque village of Moclinejo in the Axarquía region recently hosted its annual Fiesta de Viñeros, a vibrant celebration dedicated to the area's rich winemaking heritage and the traditional process of producing muscatel raisins. The event, held on the first Sunday of September, drew crowds eager to participate in and witness the time-honored customs.A central highlight of the festival was the grape stomping, a practice that dates back centuries. Participants, including local dignitaries and community members, gathered at a traditional "lagar" (grape press) to crush freshly harvested grapes with their feet, a spectacle that captivated onlookers. "It's a day to honor the hard work of our farmers and the unique muscatel grape," stated a local organizer, emphasizing the cultural significance of the labor.Beyond the grape pressing, the festival offered a diverse range of activities. Visitors explored exhibitions showcasing local crafts and the history of winemaking, and had the opportunity to tour Bodegas Dimobe, a prominent local winery. Culinary delights were also a major draw, with attendees sampling regional wines, fresh grapes, and the renowned muscatel raisins. The community united over two giant paellas prepared for all attendees, a gesture of hospitality that underscored the festival's communal spirit. While entrance to the paella was once free, a symbolic one-euro charge now helps manage the large crowds, which sometimes necessitate the preparation of a third paella to accommodate everyone. The Fiesta de Viñeros continues to be a cornerstone of Moclinejo's cultural calendar, preserving agricultural traditions and fostering a strong sense of community.
