University Dog Appointed 'Pro-Rector,' Inspires National Animal Adoption Campaign
In Santa Maria, Brazil, a heartwarming story unfolds at the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM). Silveira, a beloved canine resident for a decade, has unexpectedly become a national sensation. His recent, symbolic appointment as "Pro-Rector of Canine Affairs" is a testament to his endearing presence on campus. "Silveira has always been a part of the UFSM family," says a professor, recalling his presence at classes and graduation photos. A student adds, "I remember him strolling through the law school hallways." This fame has propelled Silveira into a symbol for animal rescue and adoption. The UFSM's Zelo project, along with the university itself, is actively promoting animal adoption and selling Silveira-themed merchandise to fund their initiatives. With over 85 animals awaiting homes, the Zelo project operates a thrift store to support their cause. The official nomination of Silveira, formalized in a May 20th, 2025, Animal Portaria, underscores the university's commitment to animal welfare and the positive impact a single dog can have on raising awareness and funds for a vital cause.
