Gardeners often face the perplexing issue of tomato leaves curling, a common concern that can lead to worries about plant health and yield. However, a recent video by gardening expert 'Semena Altaya' sheds light on this phenomenon, offering reassurance and practical advice. The expert explains that leaf curling in tomatoes is primarily a plant's adaptive response to environmental stressors, rather than a sign of severe disease or impending crop failure. "In 99% of cases, tomatoes curl their leaves when growing conditions are not ideal," states the expert. "This includes situations where it's too hot, too humid, or if there's been over or under-watering." She demonstrated how some varieties, like the 'Shurochka' tomato, are bred to withstand high temperatures, while others, such as the 'Korolevich Early Indeterminate Large-fruited' variety, are more sensitive to heat and will curl their leaves in response to conditions like those experienced in Altai, where greenhouse temperatures can soar to +40-50 degrees Celsius. Crucially, the expert emphasized that this leaf curling does not impact the plant's yield. "As you can see, the harvest is still excellent," she noted, pointing to abundant green tomatoes on affected plants. The main takeaway for gardeners is to select tomato varieties that are well-suited to their specific climate and growing conditions. While the appearance of curled leaves might not be aesthetically pleasing, it's often a natural adaptive mechanism that doesn't compromise the fruit production.
