BARCELONA – Prominent media figure Toni Cruanyes has shed light on the historical absence of LGTBI role models during his formative years and the enduring stigma that surrounded the community. Speaking in a recent interview, Cruanyes recalled a time when being openly homosexual was often conflated with negative stereotypes, including transvestism or conditions like AIDS. "When I was 14, 15 years old, being homosexual was equivalent to, I don't know, transvestism in El Molino, to AIDS, in that era too," Cruanyes stated, highlighting the deeply negative associations prevalent at the time. While acknowledging a notable evolution in social perception, Cruanyes revealed that the battle against prejudice is far from over. He continues to face offensive comments on social media platforms due to his sexual orientation. "It's still the case that on social media, people still insult me for these issues," he shared, underscoring the persistent challenges faced by LGTBI individuals. Cruanyes stressed the vital importance of visibility, particularly for younger generations. He believes that having openly LGTBI figures serves not only as a source of self-affirmation for youth but also as a means to educate their parents and broader society. "It's about trying to transform this reality so that younger people have references, and many times not so much for themselves, but to teach their parents," he explained. He concluded by asserting the necessity of living authentically, stating, "I've passed, let's say, by the much more direct path, which is to try to be as I am."
