Belgrade, Serbia - An American student, Shay the They, recently shared their observations on parenting dynamics in Serbia, highlighting a notable contrast to their experiences in the United States. During their study abroad program, Shay noted a refreshing prevalence of fathers actively engaged in daily childcare, including taking children to parks and participating in play, tasks often primarily assigned to mothers in American households. "It was the first time I really saw fathers doing labor that, with the way I was raised and also in the culture in America, was considered women's labor," Shay stated in a recent video. They described seeing "the whole family unit outside," with fathers pushing children on swings and engaging in familial labor "just as much as the woman." This observation led Shay to reflect on the gendered expectations in American parenting, where women often bear a disproportionate burden of childcare, which, as they noted, "shortens their lifespan in American households." In contrast, the more equitable distribution of parenting responsibilities in Serbia appeared to foster a different social dynamic, even among young adults. Shay observed that female students in Serbia were "more forward" and engaged in debates "very openly with their gender counterparts," suggesting a link between early upbringing and self-expression in adulthood. The student expressed deep appreciation for this cultural difference, calling it a "positive experience" to witness such active and gentle fatherhood.
