The gardener and author shared the best way to get store-bought thyme to sprout roots.
A British gardener, known as Simon Akeroyd, has shared a simple and cost-effective method for cultivating thyme at home, potentially eliminating the need for repeated purchases. The technique, demonstrated in a recent online video, involves using sprigs of thyme bought from a supermarket. According to Akeroyd, the process begins by removing the lower leaves from the thyme sprigs and trimming their ends. These prepared sprigs are then placed in a glass of water. After approximately two weeks, the sprigs are observed to develop small roots. Once rooted, they can be transferred and planted into compost, where they will continue to grow into mature thyme plants. This method offers a sustainable way for home cooks and gardening enthusiasts to ensure a continuous supply of fresh thyme, leveraging readily available supermarket produce to establish a perennial herb garden.
