ISTANBUL, Turkey – A recent viral video by Spanish content creator Sofía Puertas has shed light on the surprising cost of groceries in Istanbul's Carrefour supermarkets compared to Spain. Puertas, who uploaded the video from Spain, detailed her experience attempting to do a typical grocery shop in Istanbul, only to find many essential items, particularly protein and imported goods, significantly more expensive. In her video, Puertas highlighted specific examples, showing that 500 grams of ground meat cost approximately 10.07 Euros, and a 50-gram bar of Lindt 99% cocoa chocolate, which retails for around 5.79 Euros in Spain, was priced at about 8.44 Euros in Istanbul. "It's impossible," she stated, expressing her inability to purchase the same items she would normally buy in Spain. "Everything is very expensive." Curiously, Puertas noted a stark contrast with dining out. "When you go to restaurants, the food is cheaper," she observed. This disparity suggests a differing economic landscape for consumers, where preparing meals at home might be costlier than eating out. Puertas concluded that she would opt to consume protein at work or in restaurants due to the high supermarket prices.
