Kenyans Demand Accountability for Healthcare Access
Healthcare Access in Kenya: A Conversation on Accountability Kenya's healthcare system faces significant challenges. Article 43 of the Kenyan Constitution guarantees every citizen the right to healthcare, including emergency care. However, implementation remains an issue. A recent discussion on Spice FM highlighted this problem. Dr. Davji Atellah, KMPDU Secretary General, emphasized the need for Kenyans to hold their leaders accountable. "We as Kenyans must be ready to hold our leaders accountable because the constitution outlines it very clearly in Article 43 that healthcare is a right of all Kenyans and that emergency care should be accessible." He pointed to the ongoing struggles between national and county governments in providing adequate healthcare as a key obstacle. The discussion also revealed the frustrations of patients facing delays and insufficient resources. The guests highlighted the need for greater transparency and responsiveness from elected officials. The high cost of healthcare, especially in private facilities, was another concern. The panelists called for a renewed commitment to implementing Universal Health Coverage (UHC) and for increased public awareness of their rights. The conversation on Spice FM serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of citizen engagement in demanding better healthcare services in Kenya.
