Stacey Abrams Alleges "Death Panels" in New Medicare AI Program, Cites Threat to Democracy

Atlanta, GA - Prominent political figure and author Stacey Abrams has issued a stark warning regarding a new pilot program she attributes to former President Trump and Republicans, which reportedly utilizes artificial intelligence to determine Medicare patients' treatment eligibility. In a recent public statement, Abrams asserted that this initiative constitutes the "first wave of death panels," a claim she emphasized was "not hyperbolic." According to Abrams, the program allows an algorithm, rather than a doctor, to approve or deny care, leading to "lower quality of life and the potential of inadequate medical treatment." She further alleged that private tech companies involved in the program stand to profit from denying treatments, stating, "The more care they block, the more they profit." Abrams drew a parallel to the "histrionics" surrounding the Affordable Care Act but highlighted the financial incentive for private entities in this new program. Abrams also connected these developments to broader concerns about the weaponization of technology, referencing reports of Elon Musk's AI chatbot, Grok, being rewritten to reflect "right-wing talking points." She described this as a dangerous trend where "algorithms become the tools of autocrats, they become weapons used against the people." The program, which Abrams stated is already active in pilot states including Arizona, New Jersey, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, and Washington, is characterized by her as "Step Seven in the autocrat's playbook: weaponize technology to strip away rights from the vulnerable, to control what people believe, and decide who counts." She concluded by urging the public to speak up, warning that if left unchallenged, these actions would not stop with Medicare, but would be "another step toward autocracy," jeopardizing both health and democracy.
