"The biggest mistake people make is they talk a lot."
In a recent segment from "The Diary Of A CEO" podcast, former U.S. Secret Service Special Agent Evy Poumpouras shared her perspective on effective communication and influence. Poumpouras highlighted that the common misconception is that control comes from speaking more, but she asserted, "It's garbage. You have the power, because you've got me now." She elaborated on the importance of understanding an individual's "motivational mindset," which includes their values and belief systems. "Everybody's motivated by something different," Poumpouras stated, emphasizing the need to "hear you and pay attention to you to understand what that is." She explained that by allowing others to talk, one gains crucial insights into their motivations. Poumpouras provided an example, recalling an interaction where an individual was primarily "motivated by money." She noted that through listening, she also learned about his family life and upbringing, which further informed her understanding. "If you give people enough space, they will reveal themselves to you," she concluded. The agent stressed that people are often too focused on being heard themselves, missing the opportunity to gain valuable information by listening.
