Severe Storms Devastate Parts of Romania
Severe Weather Phenomena Cause Significant Damage in Romania Heavy rain, strong winds, and hailstorms struck parts of Romania on June 8th, 2025, resulting in considerable material damage. The National Meteorological Administration (ANM) issued yellow and subsequently orange weather alerts for several regions. Stirile Kanal D interviewed Mihai Timu, a meteorologist on duty at ANM, who explained the causes of the extreme weather. "We had unstable atmospheric conditions, what we call a warm, subtropical air mass rich in moisture," Timu stated. "This often leads to the development of thunderstorms, particularly cumulonimbus clouds that can produce torrential downpours, frequent lightning strikes, and large hail." The report showed footage of flooded streets, fallen trees, and damaged buildings in the Targu Mures area, where wind speeds reached 86 km/h. Timu emphasized the increasing frequency and intensity of such events in recent years, urging people to heed ANM warnings. The video serves as a stark reminder of the importance of weather preparedness.
