Expert Pediatrician Warns Parents: Avoid These 3 Harmful Gifts for Children
Kyiv, Ukraine – A pediatrician from St. Paraskeva Medical Center has issued a public warning regarding common gifts for children, identifying three categories deemed most harmful across different age groups. Dr. Svitlana Illyushyna, a pediatrician and family doctor, highlighted these concerns in a recent video, aiming to guide parents towards healthier choices for their children's development. For infants under one year old, Dr. Illyushyna strongly advises against the use of baby walkers. "If you only knew how many injuries — fractures, dislocations, bumps — infants sustain from walkers, often leading to neurologist visits, you would be appalled," she stated. She emphasized that healthy children do not require such devices for walking, as they can impede natural development and pose significant safety risks. Moving to children aged one to six, the pediatrician identified smartphones and tablets as highly detrimental. "This is not the age for screen time," Dr. Illyushyna asserted. "A child before school age should be running, moving, jumping, climbing stairs, and driving parents crazy, not sitting on a phone." She underscored the importance of active play for physical and cognitive development in early childhood. Lastly, for all age groups, Dr. Illyushyna pointed to sweets and fast food as universally harmful. "We are habituating children to unhealthy eating from a very young age," she explained. "They don't need sweets; they don't need fast food. Feed them proper, healthy food. Healthy eating habits are formed in people up to five years old." The medical center's advice aims to foster long-term well-being through informed parenting decisions.
