Islamic Scholar Discusses Women's Role in Humanitarian Missions Without Mahram

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia – A recent discussion on Suria Malaysia's 'Reset Jiwa' program, featuring Ustaz Amin, delved into the nuanced Islamic rulings regarding women's participation in humanitarian missions, particularly when traveling without a mahram (male guardian). The conversation addressed public queries and concerns about women joining efforts like the 'Sumud Flotilla Nusantara' for Palestine. Ustaz Amin clarified that while the general Islamic principle discourages women from traveling long distances without a mahram, exceptions exist under specific circumstances. "There are exemptions in certain situations," Ustaz Amin stated, explaining that if women travel in a secure and protected group, such as a 'ladies Umrah group,' where their safety and modesty are ensured, it can be permissible. He emphasized that the primary concern is the woman's security and protection from harm or exploitation. The Ustaz further highlighted the critical role women play in humanitarian efforts, especially in assisting other women and children. He shared an example from the time of Prophet Muhammad, where women migrated without their mahrams for Hijrah, and referenced historical figures like Khaulah binti Al-Azwar, a female warrior in early Islam. "When we arrive at a place like Gaza, we know there are women who need to be attended to by female doctors, female psychologists, and mothers who need to express their feelings to female activists," he elaborated. He also noted the profound impact female activists can have, even helping mothers regain the ability to breastfeed their children by providing emotional support. Ustaz Amin underscored the widespread family support for women activists involved in these missions. "We see all our activists receive blessings from their families, their husbands, their mahrams, all sending them off at the airport," he recounted, dismissing any notions of disapproval from their families. The discussion concluded by affirming the vital and often indispensable contributions of women in global humanitarian endeavors.
