Bucharest, Romania – A recent online video has challenged a widely circulated claim attributed to former Romanian Prime Minister Victor Ponta regarding the Iron Gates dam and the prevention of flooding in Belgrade. The video, released by content creator Sus Moralul Romanesc, meticulously debunks Ponta's alleged self-denunciation, which suggested he single-handedly prevented a catastrophic flood in the Serbian capital by managing the dam. In the video, the speaker highlights the geographical realities that render Ponta's claim impossible. He points out that a distance of approximately 235 kilometers separates the Iron Gates dam from Belgrade. Furthermore, he emphasizes the significant elevation difference between Turnu Severin, located near the dam, and Belgrade, noting a more than 20-meter disparity in their lowest surface levels. "Think about how the flow of the Danube had to be, and how the dam at the Iron Gates had to be so that it would somehow reach a kind of reservoir all the way to Belgrade for 235 km, so the water level could raise somewhere 20 meters!" the speaker states, underscoring the sheer scale of the hydrological impossibility. The video also questions the logic behind the claim, asking why the Serbian side of the dam would not have been able to release water if necessary, given the shared nature of the structure. The creator concludes that Ponta's statement is an "absurdity" and indicates plans for a follow-up video to explore the underlying purpose of such widespread misinformation.
