A couple has successfully transformed their 1978 Minnesota home by installing a DIY slat ceiling, offering a budget-friendly alternative to traditional ceiling renovations. The homeowners, known as Sway + Sarah | DIY PROJECTS, documented their process of covering an existing popcorn ceiling without the need for scraping. The project involved purchasing 4x8 1/4 inch plywood boards, which were then cut into 4-inch planks using a rented table saw. After sanding and staining the planks, the ceiling was painted black to add depth before the wooden slats were securely attached using liquid nails and a brad nailer. The couple reported that the entire project, including all materials, cost just under $1200. They noted that a similar project using hardwood materials would have cost over $6,000, highlighting the significant savings achieved through their DIY approach. The project demonstrates a creative and economical solution for modernizing home interiors.
