KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – A recent incident at a surau (prayer room) in the Rimbayu Halaman11 housing area has sparked discussion after an elderly man was reportedly asked to leave the premises. The video, which circulated online, shows a representative of the housing community approaching the man, who was performing prayers, and informing him that non-residents are not permitted to use the facility. According to the representative in the video, the decision to restrict access to residents only was prompted by a recent theft incident within the surau. The elderly man, who identified himself as being from a nearby residential area, explained that he had only come to the surau to perform his morning prayers. Despite his explanation, he was requested to leave, and he complied with the request. The surau is described as a communal property maintained by the residents' association through collected maintenance fees. This incident highlights the ongoing debate in some gated communities regarding access to shared amenities for non-residents, particularly in religious spaces. Community members have expressed varied opinions on the matter, weighing the need for security against the principle of open access for worship.
