Belarusian "Tuneyadets" Law Sparks Debate as Citizens Seek Clarity on Economic Engagement

Minsk, Belarus – A recent video by Belarusian content creator Tatiana Sad has shed light on the ongoing challenges faced by citizens under Belarus's controversial 'tuneyadets' law. Sad, who received a letter classifying her as 'not engaged in the economy,' shared her personal experience and offered practical advice to others in similar situations. Despite having a three-year-old child, owning over a hectare of land for a personal subsidiary farm, and being a professional income tax payer, Sad found herself on the list. "I received a letter stating that I am included in the database of persons not engaged in the economy, in common parlance, a tuneyadets," she stated in her video. The 'tuneyadets' law, which targets individuals deemed to be freeloading and not contributing to the state's economy, has drawn criticism and confusion among the populace. Many citizens, like Sad, find themselves in the database despite having legitimate reasons for not being formally employed or having other forms of economic activity. Sad outlined three main ways to be removed from the list: 1. Providing a certificate from the village council or district executive committee confirming the operation of a personal subsidiary farm. 2. Submitting a copy of a child's birth certificate if the child is under seven years old. 3. Making a minimal tax payment without claiming a tax deduction. "Any one of these points will be sufficient to have you removed from the database of people not participating in the economy," Sad advised. The video has sparked significant discussion online, with many users sharing their own experiences and frustrations with the law. Comments ranged from "What, can't you be a housewife anymore?" to "They don't think that 60% of men are rotational workers and bring much more money from abroad into the country than the salary in the country itself."
