Sheinbaum Takes Legal Action Against Duarte for Illegal Water Use
Mexico City: Sheinbaum to Prosecute Duarte for Water Theft Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum announced a criminal complaint against former Chihuahua governor César Duarte for the alleged illegal use of 700,000 cubic meters of water. The water was used for the construction of a dam, four reservoirs, and a well on Duarte's property without the necessary permits. The complaint, to be filed with the Attorney General's Office (FGR), will also include any officials complicit in the alleged water theft. "What cannot be allowed is the private appropriation of water without permission, especially in a place where there is water scarcity," Sheinbaum stated during a press conference. The National Water Commission (Conagua) will lead the investigation and legal proceedings. This case highlights the ongoing challenges of water management and resource allocation in Mexico, particularly in regions facing water stress. The outcome of the lawsuit will have significant implications for future water resource management policies and enforcement.
