Timișoara's "Piața Mică" Market Nears Completion of Major Modernization
Timișoara, Romania – The "Piața Mică" (Mehala 2 Market), a vital hub for local fruit and vegetable producers in Timișoara, is nearing the completion of extensive modernization works. The project, overseen by Piețe SA, aims to transform the nearly 8,000 square meter space into a more efficient and comfortable environment for both vendors and customers.Key improvements include the complete asphalting of the market area and the installation of a new rainwater collection system, addressing long-standing issues with the ground becoming impractical during adverse weather. Municipal teams are now preparing to clearly delineate the market space, which will facilitate organized access for producer vehicles.Upon its full completion, the modernized "Piața Mică" is expected to host up to 100 local producers, significantly enhancing the availability of fresh produce for residents of the Mehala neighborhood and surrounding areas.Mayor Dominic Fritz commented on the initiative, stating, "We received repeated requests for the modernization of this market. There was a real and pressing need to intervene. Through this investment, we ensure that the space will function efficiently and in decent conditions, both for producers and for buyers, including during periods of unfavorable weather."In addition to the physical upgrades, Piețe SA plans to install a comprehensive video surveillance system to further improve security and operational efficiency. The Mehala 2 Market plays a crucial role in supporting local producers and is dedicated to wholesale trade. During the summer, it operates daily from Monday to Saturday between 4:00 AM and 8:00 PM, and on Sundays from 7:00 AM to 2:00 PM. For the remainder of the year, operating hours are Monday to Saturday, from 5:00 AM to 6:00 PM. This investment by the City Hall addresses a long-standing need and restores the utility of this public space for the community.
