Last Words from Gaza: A Video Exposes the Bread Massacre
Gaza's Bread Massacre: Ameen Khalifa's Last Video Exposes Humanitarian Crisis Gaza Strip – The death of 30-year-old Ameen Khalifa has brought renewed attention to the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. Khalifa, a victim of what is being called the "Bread Massacre," filmed his final moments, a harrowing account of hunger and violence. His video shows him and others desperately searching for food under constant threat of Israeli gunfire near humanitarian aid centers run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. According to the UN, nearly a hundred people have been killed since May 27th in similar circumstances. In the video, Khalifa's voice is filled with despair. "This food is soaked in blood. I'm dying, God help us." These were his last words, spoken just before dawn on June 3rd, as gunfire crackled around him. Ameen's brother, Mohammad Khalifa, explained that Ameen had insisted on going out the previous evening to find flour, "The situation was desperate." Ameen had managed to collect some biscuits, noodles, and little else. He survived a first encounter with Israeli soldiers but not the second. Mohammad called Ameen the next morning, only to have a woman answer. Ameen, along with three others, had been killed. The Israeli army claims their fire was only "warning shots." The video is a stark reminder of the human cost of the conflict in Gaza and the desperate struggle for survival faced by many civilians.
