Interior Design Expert Reveals Top Home Decor 'Pet Peeves' and Offers Smart Solutions

Interior design expert Claire, known as 'Your Interior Mentor,' recently shared her top three interior design pet peeves in a widely viewed online video. Offering a 'tongue in cheek' perspective, Claire detailed common mistakes she observes in homes and provided practical solutions for each. Her first point of contention was the use of undersized rugs. 'Having a tiny rug in your living or dining room that looks like it's floating around... it gets moved every time somebody walks over it and you're constantly repositioning it,' she stated. Claire advises homeowners to opt for rugs large enough to accommodate at least the front two legs of a sofa, or even all legs of the sofa and coffee table, to create a cohesive look. For those with existing small rugs, she suggests layering them over a larger, neutral rug, such as a jute rug. The second design choice Claire dislikes is the 'runway of spotlights.' 'We're not Gatwick Airport,' she quipped, emphasizing that rows of spotlights are often unnecessary. Instead, she recommends a more thoughtful approach to lighting, incorporating fewer, strategically placed spotlights alongside a mix of beautiful pendants, table lamps, and floor lamps to achieve varied and inviting illumination. Finally, Claire addressed themed children's rooms, acknowledging that children often request princess or superhero designs. Drawing from personal experience, she recounted her son's request for a Lego-themed room. 'The idea of it brought me out in hives,' she admitted, explaining her approach to a 'subtle play' on the theme. She incorporated Lego colors into a muted palette and added easily swappable elements like framed Lego posters and storage heads, ensuring the room's longevity as her son's tastes evolve. Claire concluded by promoting her one-to-one mood boarding service and downloadable PDF guides, designed to help individuals confidently style their homes.
