As summer draws to a close, gardeners are encouraged to continue their efforts into September with essential tasks to maximize their harvest and prepare for the next growing season. "The Grumpy Gardener," a popular online gardening personality, recently shared his top tips for the month, emphasizing that gardening doesn't stop with the end of summer. According to The Grumpy Gardener, September is a crucial time for harvesting. He advises picking ripe tomatoes and chilies promptly to prevent them from spoiling. "Things like tomatoes should be harvested at this point before they go over," he stated, adding that "they're now ready for eating and they will have ripened." He demonstrated harvesting a cluster of ripe, orange tomatoes and yellow chilies, encouraging viewers to "chop them off and enjoy." Beyond harvesting, September also presents prime opportunities for planting. Gardeners who have collected allium seeds are urged to plant them directly into the ground without delay. "Don't delay, there's no need to wait until spring," he explained. "Get them in the ground, get them building a root system and you'll have lovely plumes next season." Additionally, garlic is a key crop for September planting. "Garlic likes to be overwintered," he noted, highlighting that "the frosts and the cold can help create a bigger bulb" for an early summer harvest. Radishes and turnips are also recommended for planting this month, with turnips planted now potentially yielding a Christmas harvest, described as "golf ball slash baseball size" and perfect for a "lovely Christmas dinner." The Grumpy Gardener's advice underscores that a productive garden can extend beyond the traditional summer months, offering continuous opportunities for growth and harvest.
