Louisville, KY - Dr. Ricky Jones, a prominent Professor of Pan-African Studies at the University of Louisville, has initiated a weekly video series documenting what he describes as a "hostile work environment" for Black professors at predominantly white universities. In his inaugural video, released on August 19, 2025, Dr. Jones, who is entering his 30th year in academia, expressed a notable lack of enthusiasm for the new school year, a stark contrast to his past experiences. Dr. Jones attributes the escalating hostility to current political activities and what he perceives as the silence and complicity of university leadership. He claims that despite official statements of inclusivity, the actions of politicians and university administrators convey a message of unwelcomeness to Black academics. "We're basically in places where politicians, through their activities, and the silence of university leaders... are basically saying, 'we don't want y'all here,'" Jones stated. The professor highlighted a concerning trend of Black faculty and staff departing the University of Louisville in significant numbers, suggesting that the institution's diversity office acts as a "sham" and its members as "collaborators." He emphasized that his experience is not isolated, noting that many Black professors across the country face similar challenges. Dr. Jones also acknowledged the difficulties in leaving such positions, citing the lengthy process of securing new academic roles and family considerations. Dr. Jones plans to continue his weekly chronicle, aiming to document the ongoing situation and provide transparency. He concluded by stating, "I don't even know where it's going to lead me both professionally and psychologically."
