Madrid, Spain – A tax expert has clarified common misconceptions surrounding tax return refunds from Hacienda, Spain's tax agency, for the 2024 campaign. Contrary to popular belief, submitting tax declarations in the initial days of the campaign does not guarantee a faster refund for most taxpayers. According to the expert, Hacienda generally begins processing refunds approximately two days after the campaign commences. The typical processing time for refunds ranges from two to four weeks. For cases involving high refund amounts or those requiring additional verification, the process may take longer. The tax agency has a maximum period of six months to issue refunds, with a deadline of December 30th. Should Hacienda exceed this timeframe, it is legally obligated to pay delay interest to the taxpayer. The expert noted that an exception applies to straightforward tax declarations that are confirmed directly, where early submission might indeed expedite the refund process. However, for more complex cases, the processing time remains largely consistent regardless of when the declaration is filed. She emphasized that a key advantage of submitting declarations early is the extended window available for correcting any potential errors. Taxpayers can monitor the status of their refund at any time through the 'Servicio de tramitación de borrador/declaración (Renta WEB)' section on Hacienda's official website.
