Moldova's Anticorruption Center Exposes Sanatorium Scandal
Moldovan Anticorruption Center Uncovers Corruption Scheme at "Speranta" Sanatorium The National Anticorruption Center (CNA) in Moldova launched a significant investigation into corruption at the "Speranta" sanatorium. On May 27, 2025, CNA officers conducted searches at over 50 locations nationwide, focusing on the sanatorium's operations. The director, Olga Arseni, and her deputy were detained for questioning. Authorities seized approximately 1.5 million lei in various currencies during the searches. The CNA alleges that Arseni and her deputy engaged in passive corruption, benefiting from their positions and falsifying state procurement records. According to preliminary findings, they received bribes ranging from 10,000 to 40,000 lei for manipulating contracts. Audio recordings corroborate these claims. Arseni's declared income for 2024 shows approximately 230,000 lei in salary, but she did not declare any real estate holdings. Social media posts from her daughter reveal lavish vacations in Greece, Turkey, and Egypt, raising questions about the source of these funds. The Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, under which "Speranta" operates, stated their zero-tolerance policy toward corruption. The investigation continues, with authorities aiming to determine the full extent of the corruption scheme and hold those responsible accountable. This case underscores the ongoing battle against corruption within Moldova's public sector.
