Moldova Mourns the Loss of Celebrated Composer Eugen Doga Chisinau, Moldova – June 6, 2025 – The Republic of Moldova observed a day of national mourning for the passing of renowned composer Eugen Doga, a symbol of national culture and People's Artist. Doga, who died at the age of 88, left behind a vast legacy of music, including works for over 200 films, and the anthem of Chisinau. His funeral was a large-scale event, with hundreds of people attending to pay their respects. The procession began at the National Palace named after Nicolae Sulac, proceeding to the central cemetery for the burial. While many people attended to mourn the loss of the beloved composer, the absence of President Maia Sandu and Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu was noted and criticized by some members of the public. According to Igor Zakharov, an advisor to the head of state, Sandu was out of the country on a private visit, and Grosu was in the Netherlands for a meeting with the Moldovan diaspora. Tudor Cerniz, Master of Arts and director of the "Ginta Latină" theater, reflected, "Eugen Doga, one of the first composers of the Republic of Moldova, was also the author of the music for the play 'Memories about Ion Creangă,' directed by Valeriu Cupcea in 1975." The sentiment of loss was widespread, with many expressing the profound impact Doga's music had on their lives. His music, spanning diverse styles from Moldovan and Romanian folk to Latin American and Asian motifs, will continue to live on.
