Pediatrician Issues Urgent Warning: Avoid Dangerous Home Remedies for Infant Constipation
Kyiv, Ukraine – A leading pediatrician, Dr. Maryna Shakotko, has issued a critical warning to parents regarding common, yet potentially dangerous, practices used to address infant constipation. In a recent online video, Dr. Shakotko explained that newborns are still developing their bowel functions and often exhibit discomfort, such as grunting, straining, or leg-tucking, as they learn to defecate. She stressed that these behaviors are typically normal during a baby's first months of life. 'A child lives in utero; they don't know how to poop,' Dr. Shakotko stated. 'They need to learn this process after birth.' The pediatrician highlighted the severe risks associated with physically stimulating a baby's rectum. 'If parents try to physically help the child by inserting cotton swabs, gas tubes, or chemical substances like laundry soap, or even a thermometer into the rectum to induce defecation, it often ends very badly for the child,' she cautioned. Dr. Shakotko emphasized that such interventions can lead to trauma of the mucous membrane and other serious, unpleasant conditions. She advised parents to stick to gentle, non-invasive methods, such as tummy massages or pressing the baby's legs towards their abdomen, to help relieve discomfort. The message underscores the importance of seeking professional medical advice for infant health concerns rather than resorting to unproven or harmful home remedies.
