San Miguelito Schools Face Waste Crisis as Contractor Threatens to Halt Services
San Miguelito Schools Face Waste Collection Suspension Due to B/. 1.4 Million Debt San Miguelito, Panama – Starting June 30th, 47 public schools in San Miguelito face the suspension of waste collection services. This is due to a significant debt owed to Revisalud, the company responsible for the service, amounting to B/. 1,389,017.27. The issue stems from the failure to renew an inter-institutional agreement between the Ministry of Education (Meduca) and the San Miguelito Municipality. "Revisalud is threatening to eliminate waste collection services in our schools," stated San Miguelito Mayor Irma Hernandez in a recent video statement. She emphasized that this action is a direct consequence of the accumulated debt and the lack of a renewed agreement. Mayor Hernandez presented documents showing the original contract, which includes schools, and a subsequent addendum that was never approved by the Comptroller's office, making previous payments by Meduca illegal. The situation highlights a conflict between the municipality, Meduca, and Revisalud. Mayor Hernandez is calling on Meduca and the central government to address the debt and ensure the continuation of waste collection services for the schools. She also noted that the poor service provided by Revisalud is documented in reports signed by school principals. The municipality is exploring solutions to provide uninterrupted waste collection services, potentially involving a new contractor. The situation underscores the need for clear agreements and transparent financial management in public services.
