Panama Rivers Choke on Pollution: 11 Critical Points Found
Panama Rivers Contaminated: MiAmbiente Finds 11 Pollution Hotspots A recent inspection by Panama's Ministry of Environment (MiAmbiente) revealed at least 11 critical pollution points in the Estivaná and La Villa rivers, primarily in the Macaracas area. The contamination stems from untreated sewage being directly discharged into the waterways. This poses a significant threat to the environment and public health of nearby communities. "Untreated sewage is being dumped directly into the rivers," stated a MiAmbiente official in a recent TVN Noticias report. "This is a serious environmental and health risk that we are working to address." The National Institute of Aqueducts and Alcantarillados Nacionales (Idaan) responded by stating that the local water treatment plants are currently operating at 75% capacity. MiAmbiente is working to identify and sanction those responsible for the illegal dumping. The situation highlights the urgent need for improved wastewater management and environmental protection in Panama.
