Panama Town Battles Rise in Homelessness, Opens New Support Center

La Chorrera, Panama, Faces Rise in Homelessness: Community Calls for Action La Chorrera, Panama is grappling with a significant increase in its homeless population, prompting concerns from residents and calls for increased support from local authorities. TVN Noticias reports that estimates place the number of individuals living on the streets at over 60, many struggling with addiction and mental health challenges. "More than sixty people survive on the streets of La Chorrera," stated a local official in the TVN Noticias report, highlighting the severity of the situation. The report further emphasized that many of those affected are grappling with drug addiction or mental health disorders. In response to this growing crisis, a new community center has been established to provide assistance. The center, located in the former Magali Ruiz building, offers essential resources such as food, clothing, and support for those seeking to overcome their addictions. Alfredo Graham, a community leader, noted that while 38 individuals have been assisted, "there are still around 60 who need these services." The center's efforts extend beyond providing basic necessities; they also include a crucial outreach program to connect homeless individuals with their families. However, the report highlights the challenges in reuniting families. Dr. Gonzalo Gonzalez, a psychiatrist, commented on the prevalence of drug use, particularly marijuana and cocaine, among the homeless population, along with mental health conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. The situation in La Chorrera reflects a broader trend in Panama and underscores the need for comprehensive strategies to address homelessness and its underlying causes. The opening of the new community center represents a positive step, offering hope for a more supportive and inclusive community.
