Malaysia's Seafood Sector Achieves Record-Breaking Growth in 2024
Malaysia's Seafood Sector Booms: Marine Fish Production Reaches Record High Malaysia's aquatic food sector experienced remarkable growth in 2024, with marine fish production hitting a record 1.42 million metric tons. This success is largely attributed to the robust performance of the aquaculture industry, which contributed 510,315 metric tons to the total. Inland fishing, while less significant in volume, added another 7,497 metric tons. "The aquatic food sector's growth is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our fishermen and aquaculture farmers," said a spokesperson for the Fisheries Department of Malaysia. The department's announcement emphasized the sector's substantial contribution to the national economy. Beyond the impressive production figures, the report revealed that Malaysia's per capita fish consumption stands at 44.7 kilograms per year, significantly surpassing the global average of 19 kilograms. This underscores the importance of the sector in ensuring food security and providing a healthy diet for the nation's population. The success of Malaysia's fisheries sector serves as an encouraging example for other countries looking to develop sustainable and productive aquatic food systems.
