Kazakhstan Demands Share of Baikonur Launch Profits
Kazakhstan to Share in Baikonur Cosmodrome Profits: A New Chapter for Space Cooperation? Kazakhstan is set to receive a share of the revenue generated from rocket launches at the Baikonur Cosmodrome, according to a recent statement by member of parliament Yerlan Sairov. This development follows Kazakhstan's substantial investment of approximately 100 billion tenge in modernizing the facility. Sairov emphasized that, in addition to the existing rental fees paid by Russia, Kazakhstan will now receive a share of profits from each launch. This decision marks a significant shift in the dynamics of space cooperation between Kazakhstan and Russia. "Kazakhstan is investing its own funds in the development of Baikonur," Sairov explained. "Now, during rocket launches, in addition to rent, it will have its own specific financial share." While the exact amount Kazakhstan will receive is yet to be determined, Sairov expressed confidence that the profit will be substantial. The announcement comes amid reports that Russia is considering an early termination of its use of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, with potential transfer of the complex to Kazakhstan between 2026 and 2028. Sairov noted that Russia's continued use of Baikonur is currently essential due to the lack of comparable technical facilities elsewhere in the world. The financial agreement between the two countries will be finalized in the near future. This new revenue stream will provide Kazakhstan with significant economic benefits and enhance its position in the global space industry.
