La Paz, Bolivia – Former judge Claudia Castro is once again at the center of controversy, now linked to an alleged judicial consortium. This development follows her recent apprehension on Monday, accused of being part of a group seeking to remove an elected magistrate from the Supreme Court of Justice, Fanny Coaquira.
Castro, who served as a vocal member of the Departmental Justice Tribunal of La Paz until this Tuesday, has a history of contentious judicial decisions. In December 2020, within a single month, she issued rulings that benefited former Movement Towards Socialism (MAS) officials. Among these decisions, she lifted an arrest warrant against Juan Ramón Quintana, who had been granted asylum in the Mexican embassy since 2019, citing alleged procedural errors and due process violations by the Prosecutor's Office.
During the same period, Castro also annulled the electoral fraud case against former president Evo Morales and other ex-officials. Additionally, she benefited Faustino Yucra, accused of terrorism for allegedly coordinating blockades with Morales in 2019, by annulling his case. In another significant ruling, she ceased the house arrest of Nemesia Achacollo, who was accused in the multi-million dollar Indigenous Fund embezzlement case, justifying her decision by the time elapsed without a formal accusation from the Public Ministry.
In 2023, Castro ordered the initiation of an ordinary trial against former interim president Jeanine Áñez and 17 other authorities in the Senkata case. Her judicial career continued to draw scrutiny, culminating in 2024 when her candidacy for the Council of Magistracy was challenged due to several complaints, including alleged irregularities in submitted documents and her perceived affinity with the ruling party in past judicial decisions, according to opposition figures who brought these cases forward.
