LA PAZ, Bolivia – Bolivia has seen its accumulated inflation rate soar to 15.53% between January and June 2025, according to official data from the National Institute of Statistics (INE). This figure more than doubles the government's initial projection of 7.5% for the entire year. Humberto Arandia, director of the INE, stated that June was particularly critical, registering an inflation rate of 5.21%—the highest monthly increase since 2008. Arandia directly linked this surge to the blockades that have affected the country since mid-May, disrupting supply chains and increasing costs. The impact on essential goods has been significant. Prices for potatoes have risen by 20.8%, onions by 16.4%, beef with bone by 13.3%, and chicken by 13%. In La Paz, the price of a kilogram of chicken reached nearly 30 Bolivianos during the peak of the blockades, though it has since decreased to 22 Bolivianos following their resolution. In addition to the blockades, the INE report also points to other factors contributing to the inflationary pressure, including logistical challenges in hydrocarbon distribution and the impact of the exchange rate. Arandia emphasized the tangible effect on citizens, stating, "There's no way to deny this; we feel it in our pockets." He also cautioned against making new economic projections, citing the unpredictability of political events currently affecting the economy.
