La Paz, Bolivia – The Bolivian government is actively defending its industrialization policy and the performance of state-owned industrial plants amidst growing scrutiny from opposition figures. The debate centers on the efficiency and profitability of these facilities, which represent substantial national investments. Deputy Waldo Terrazas recently raised concerns, alleging that 202 industrial plants initiated by the government of Luis Arce Catacora are operating at low capacity and lack profitability. He claimed that the total investment in these projects amounts to approximately 29 billion Bolivianos. In response, Luis Siles, Vice Minister of Industrialization Policies, rejected Terrazas's figures. Siles clarified that the national government has promoted 171 industrial plants, with 36 of them currently operational and generating profits. He stated that these investments, totaling over 32 billion Bolivianos, are long-term and are expected to recover within five to seven years, depending on the industry type, with larger ventures like basic chemical or pharmaceutical plants potentially taking longer. Siles provided specific utility figures, reporting 85.3 million Bolivianos in 2022, 316 million Bolivianos in 2023, and 21.9 million Bolivianos so far in 2024 from these operational plants. He also addressed criticisms regarding 12 potato chip factories, clarifying that only one is a central government initiative located in El Alto, and another is under construction in Chuquisaca, while the rest are municipal government projects. The government maintains that each plant was constructed based on thorough technical studies, underscoring its commitment to strengthening the national economy through industrial development.
