Wedding Budget Crisis: Tariffs Hike Prices for Flowers, Dresses
Wedding Bells, But Budget Blues: Tariffs Drive Up Costs for Couples June 8, 2025 – The rising cost of weddings is causing stress for many couples, as tariffs on imported goods are driving up prices for essential items like flowers and dresses. According to a recent survey by The Knot, 36% of couples are making budget changes due to economic stress. This is particularly concerning in the wedding industry, where many couples have specific preferences for flowers, many of which are imported. "When they first came out, it was like, 'Oh my gosh, this is going to be really devastating,'" says Allison Krivachek, a wedding florist and bride, describing her reaction to the tariff increases. "And when you're talking about a wedding in flowers, when it's $5,000, plus that 10 to 25% goes a long way; it really adds up quickly." The U.S. Department of Agriculture reports that approximately 80% of cut flowers used in florist bouquets are imported. This dependence on foreign sources makes the industry particularly vulnerable to tariff increases. Many couples are now finding creative ways to cope with the increased costs, including opting for in-season flowers or making other budget adjustments. Krivachek advises couples to "Ask your florist what's in season and available, and what are the best blooms, because that's going to give you your biggest bang for your buck." By being flexible and working closely with their vendors, couples can still have the wedding of their dreams without breaking the bank. The increasing costs highlight the economic challenges faced by many couples planning weddings in the current climate. However, with careful planning and creative solutions, couples can still celebrate their special day.
