Consumer Outcry: Euroopt Accused of Price Discrepancy on Cheese

MINSK, Belarus – A recent video posted by a consumer in Belarus has sparked discussion online after she documented a significant price discrepancy for a block of "Poheshonsky New" cheese purchased at a Euroopt supermarket. The consumer, who wishes to remain anonymous, presented a clear comparison between the price listed on the product's label and the final price charged on her cash register receipt. According to the video, the cheese label indicated a price of 19.65 Belarusian Rubles per kilogram, resulting in a total of 6.76 Rubles for her 0.344 kg purchase. However, the receipt showed that the same cheese was charged at 23.99 Rubles per kilogram, leading to a total of 8.25 Rubles for the identical weight. This represents a noticeable increase of 1.49 Rubles for a single item. In her video, the consumer expressed her frustration and questioned the practices of the supermarket chain. "I have a question: how can one protect themselves when shopping at Euroopt?" she stated. "What games are cashiers and their sales representatives playing with us? I would like to express trust in this retail chain, knowing that good people work there. But the conditions of sale they offer to people, I consider illegal." Comments on the video reflect a divided public opinion. Many users sympathized with the author, suggesting that the store is obligated to sell at the advertised price and that such discrepancies are a form of deception. One commenter wrote, "They are obliged to sell it at the price indicated, it's their problem they didn't manage to change it." Another added, "This is called cheating and stealing money from the buyer. The owner of the Euroopt retail chain should be checked and fined." Conversely, a significant number of comments defended the store staff, attributing the issue to rapid price changes and logistical challenges in updating physical price tags. "The cashier is not to blame here. Prices are changed automatically by economists in the program, and cashiers don't even know," one user explained. Another offered a practical solution: "Check your receipts immediately at the checkout! If there are questions, resolve them on the spot, not on TikTok." Some also advised using the store's mobile app to scan prices before purchase. While the incident highlights a common consumer complaint, it underscores the ongoing challenge for both retailers and shoppers in managing dynamic pricing in a fast-paced retail environment. Consumers are reminded to remain vigilant and check their receipts before leaving the store.
